The Best Films of 2013

Luke Miksa's: The Negative Space Bar

2013 was a pretty fantastic year for cinema — as long as you look past onset of blockbuster/superhero fatigue, often ridiculous Australian release schedules for smaller films (aka Stupid Australian Release Schedules), and a strange fascination with the apocalypse arriving a year too late. But I kid; for every annoyance, the medium produces many things to be excited about. I’m keeping this positive!

Let’s get down to it:

Missing the cut: The Wolverine, The Way Way Back, Side Effects, The Kings of Summer

I havn’t seen these (mainly due to Stupid Australian Release Schedules) but I’d probably dig them: The Wolf of Wall Street, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, Dallas Buyers Club, 12 Years a Slave, Short Term 12

Cloud Atlas was released in Australia in 2013 (Stupid Australian Release Schedules), but for the sake of this list it will be treated as a 2012 film.

10. Captain Phillips

The second-most intense film of the year (number one is below), which is made more so due to the fact that the incredible events depicted in Captain Phillips actually happened (sans the Hollywood artistic license). Tom Hanks knocks this role out of the water with an incredibly strong showing, and his performance in the final scenes left me in shocked silence for a while. Director Paul Greengrass knocked this one up a notch, even with his visceral, shaky-shaky handheld style (which I’m generally not a fan of).

Review: This Is the End (2013) — Apocalypse is the Perfect Occasion for Improv Comedy

This Is the End

What we have here is possibly the most brilliant high-concept pitch ever conceived for a comedy: What would happen if a ragtag collection of popular comedians — all playing themselves — were trapped together in James Franco‘s mansion as the apocalypse rages outside? This is exactly what you get with This Is The End, from the writing and, for the first time, directing combination of Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen (Superbad, Knocked Up, The Green Hornet).

This Is The End does a fantastic job of taking the personalities of these real-life stars and either embellishing or subverting them. The

relationship of Jay Baruchel (She’s Out Of My League, Goon) and Seth Rogen takes centre stage as Baruchel, well-known for eschewing the Hollywood lifestyle in favour of a permanent residence in Canada, comes down to visit his buddy Rogen. The pair’s chemistry is, as you would expect, natural; as are the relationships of all the core cast. It makes it easier for the audience to relate to the film when the actors are clearly at ease with one-another and obviously had a blast filming it.

Only God Forgives – Red Band Trailer

Following up on the success of 2011’s Drive, director Nicolas Winding Refn re-teams with star Ryan Gosling and follows up with the similarly violent and atmospheric Only God Forgives.

This film has all the hallmarks of being a terrific companion piece for not only Drive, but also Pusher and Bronson; all directed by Refn. Check out the amazing Argento-style cinematography and lighting!

Also starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Vithaya Pansrlingarm, Only God Forgives currently does not have an Australian release; which I can not forgive.

This is the End – Red Band Trailer

Now this is a trailer! This is the End is a high-concept comedy from the brains-trust of Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen (Superbad, Pineapple Express), and they have gathered their buddies together to film what could be the greatest comedy ensemble to rival Cannonball Run or Ocean’s 11.

The cast consists of Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride as fictional versions of themselves, trapped in Franco’s home as the apocalypse rages around them. The film also includes Emma Watson (it feels so good to hear Hermione swearing), Michael Cera, Aziz Ansari, Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, David Krumholtz, Martin Starr, Mindy Kaling, and Kevin Hart. It even includes the Backstreet Boys and Rhianna! Who knows what other special cameos are in store?

I’m predicting This is the End to be a massive success — it will at least be better than this years other ensemble comedy, Movie 43 — and will get a wide Australian release on June 27.
